This gourd narrows to a slim waist between two lobes of white nephrite jade; the larger, lower one leans a little to one side, and its bottom edge curves softly inward. The jade carries no carved motif, and its front rises in a smooth, brightly polished dome from a flat back. Honey-yellow nephrite jade mottled with cream, flat and matte, fills the oval 18K yellow gold bezel that forms the bail. Below it, the gourd's narrow neck sits in a short gold cap with a stepped rim. On the back of the bail, out of sight from the front, is a loop to thread a chain through. Untreated nephrite jade, gourd 30 × 20 × 7 mm, 5.8 g. 18K yellow gold cap and bail. One of a kind. FAQ
Nephrite or jadeite? Both are jade, and both are exceptionally tough. Nephrite is the tougher of the two, with a softer, quieter luster; jadeite is harder and glassier. Natural nephrite jade is the principal stone in every JIE JIANG piece; where a piece also carries jadeite, its product page says so. The species is written on the tag, and for high-value pieces a GIA identification report is available on request.
Does it change with wear? Physically, a little: nephrite is very tough but not scratch-proof, so years of daily wear can leave fine surface marks. It does not fade or change colour.
Water and sweat? Fine for hand-washing and rain. Take it off for pools, hot tubs and sport: chlorine and sweat wear on silk thread and metal findings rather than on the stone. Dry it before storing.
