Head lowered and tucked beneath its breast, this crane stands on one leg and draws the other up across it, the toes curling round the shank. Across its back swells a freeform mound of white nephrite jade with honey-coloured flecks, ringed by feathers worked in matte gold relief: small and scale-like at the shoulder, longer toward the wing. The neck dips into a deep loop, with black enamel along its throat side and on the face below the eye; a patch of red enamel marks the crown, and a reddish-pink gemstone sits at the eye above the long gold beak. Dark plumes sweep down at the tail, and the scaled legs share that darker tone. Untreated nephrite jade, brooch 43.4 mm tall overall, 9.78 g. 18K gold head, neck, feathers, legs and pin; red and black enamel; a reddish-pink gemstone eye. One of a kind.

FAQ

Nephrite or jadeite? Both are jade, and both are exceptionally tough. Nephrite is the tougher of the two, with a softer, quieter luster; jadeite is harder and glassier. Natural nephrite jade is the principal stone in every JIE JIANG piece; where a piece also carries jadeite, its product page says so. The species is written on the tag, and for high-value pieces a GIA identification report is available on request.

Does it change with wear? Physically, a little: nephrite is very tough but not scratch-proof, so years of daily wear can leave fine surface marks. It does not fade or change colour.

Water and sweat? Fine for hand-washing and rain. Take it off for pools, hot tubs and sport: chlorine and sweat wear on silk thread and metal findings rather than on the stone. Dry it before storing.
